ELECTRO POLISHING on Stainless Steel

Electropolishing on stainless steel is a reverse plating process that uses the electrochemical solution to remove the outer skin of a metal part. The electropolishing process also removes contaminants, burrs and other surface imperfections that gives a glossy and reflective surface finishing.

EP 8597 ELECTRO-POLISHING PROCESS FOR STAINLESS STEEL

Description

EP 8597 will smooth, brighten and deburr stainless steel. EP 8597 can attain true mirror-bright finishes. It is non-toxic, non-flammable and non-explosive.

EP 8597 operation and maintenance is virtually problem-free. It is stock removal controllable to 1 mil. It increases corrosion resistance.

EP 8597 has a high speed operation. EP 8597 conventional plating equipment suitable. EP 8597 contains no halogens or chromates.

Equipment

D C POWER SOURCE: Supplied either by rectifiers or low-voltage motor generator sets (the same type of equipment as for plating). In either case, voltage control is recommended.

CATHODES: Usually made of chemical lead. Also, 300 series stainless steel is suitable.

SOURCE OF HEAT: Steam through lead coils, carbate, tantalum or type 316 stainless steel pipe or plate type coils. Electric immersion heaters, quartz, Carpenter “20” or Hastalloy “C”.

ELECTROPOLISHING TANK: Usually constructed of lead-lined PVC or Koroseal lined steel tanks. Polyethylene, polypropylene, fiberglass linings or type 316 stainless steel are also satisfactory. On PVC or Koroseal check temperature resistance.

FIRST WATER RINSE: Can be made of 300 series stainless steel, rubber lined or lead-lined steel, ceramic ware, fiberglass, PVC, Koroseal, polyethylene or polypropylene.

ACID / WATER RINSE TANK: Can be made of 300 series stainless steel, PVC or Koroseal line steel, ceramic ware, fiberglass, polyethylene or polypropylene.

FINAL RINSE TANK: Same as first water rinse, but if hot, should be made of 300 series stainless steel, fiberglass, polyethylene, polypropylene or ceramic ware.

Note: For small laboratory type installations, Pyrex glassware is suitable for all of the above, including the electropolishing container.
